Pantheistic Bes
Ancient Egyptians celebrated the dwarf-life protector god Bes as the Champion of Everything Good and Defender against Everything Bad. This elaborate figurine of Bes falls into a class of amuletic objects categorized as “apotropaic” as it was intended to ward off all manner of misfortune for its owner. The statue depicts Bes as a composite deity who possesses the powers of several different gods. The head of Bes sports a complex crown that includes the sun disk of Ra with stylized uraeus surrounded by multiple rearing cobras. Four smaller deity heads appear on either side imbuing the piece with additional apotropaic powers of protection. The body symbolizes Horus the Child (Harpocrates) with his left leg advanced. Bes displays four arms – the upper pair is outstretched above 2 pairs of wings, while the lower pair are to his side. The back the statue displays the folded wings of a falcon (Horus). Snakes are positioned around the figure’s feet, yet he is impervious to harm. The detachable figure stands on a pedestal inscribed with prayers of protection written in hieroglyphs. The incorporation of these elements into a single figure is meant to protect the fortunate owner from many malefic forces.
